Hiring managers for analyst roles want to see two things: that you can work with the data, and that your work changed a decision. The sample shows both.

## What makes an analyst resume stand out

Most data analyst resumes list the same tools: SQL, Excel, Power BI or Tableau, Python. Listing them is necessary, but it doesn't separate you. What does is showing what your analysis led to.

Compare "Created dashboards in Power BI" with "Built a daily returns dashboard; it showed 60% of returns came from four sizing issues, and fixing the size guide cut returns by 11%." The second line shows the tool, the finding and the business result.

## The skills section

Group skills so a recruiter can scan them in a few seconds. Name versions or specifics where they help: "Excel (pivot tables, Power Query, XLOOKUP)" says more than "Advanced Excel".

| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Querying | SQL (joins, window functions, CTEs), BigQuery, PostgreSQL |
| Spreadsheets | Excel (pivot tables, Power Query), Google Sheets |
| Visualisation | Power BI, Tableau, Looker Studio |
| Programming | Python (pandas, matplotlib), R |
| Methods | A/B test basics, cohort analysis, forecasting |

Only list a method if you can explain a time you used it. Interviewers for analyst roles often ask you to walk through a past analysis step by step.

## Writing experience lines

- Start with the question or problem: what did the team need to know?
- Say what data you used and roughly how much of it.
- Name the method or tool only if it matters to the story.
- End with the decision or result, with a number if you have one.
- Keep each line to one or two printed lines. If it needs more, it belongs in the interview.

## If you are a fresher

Without a job, your projects are your experience. Choose public datasets connected to the industry you want: e-commerce orders, cricket ball-by-ball data, Dubai rental contracts, Indian rainfall records. Ask a real question, answer it, and publish a short write-up and the code on GitHub.

One project with a clear question, clean data work and a readable conclusion is worth more than five notebooks that only make charts. Recruiters often open the link, so make the first screen of the README say what you found.

Certificates such as the Google Data Analytics Certificate or a Microsoft Power BI certification can help you get past a filter, but projects are what you will be asked about.

## Tailor it for India or the UAE

For roles in India, include your CGPA while you have under two years of experience, and Class 10 and 12 marks if the company asks for them. For roles in the UAE, add your location, visa status and notice period near the top, and list the languages you can work in. Arabic is often an advantage for analyst roles that present to local stakeholders.

## How should I write a data analyst resume?

Write a one-page data analyst resume that groups your tools (SQL, Excel, a BI tool, Python) in a short skills section and spends most of the space on results: for each role or project, the business question, the data you used, and the decision or change your analysis led to, with numbers where you have them. Freshers should replace experience with two or three public-data projects linked on GitHub.

- **Core tools:** SQL, Excel, Power BI or Tableau, Python
- **Each line:** Question, data, result
- **Freshers:** Two or three public-data projects
- **Template:** Cobalt or Plainfield, free

## Questions

### Should I put a portfolio link on my analyst resume?

Yes, if it has real work in it. Link GitHub or a simple portfolio page next to your email, and make sure the best project is the first thing it shows.

### Is Python required for data analyst jobs?

Not for every role. SQL and Excel come up in almost every posting; Python is common but often listed as preferred. Read each posting and put the tools it asks for first.
