What is an AI interviewer?

How AI job interviews work, the different kinds, and what candidates and employers should check.

Definition

An AI interviewer is software that conducts a job interview: it asks questions, listens to the answers, asks follow-up questions and produces a score or report. Some run by text chat, some ask candidates to record video answers, and some hold a live two-way conversation by voice or video.

Three kinds of AI interview

  • Chat interviews: the candidate types answers to questions
  • Recorded (one-way) video: the candidate records answers to a camera, and AI scores the recordings
  • Live (two-way) conversation: the AI interviewer talks with the candidate in real time and follows up on what they say

What employers should check

  • Does a person make every hiring decision?
  • Does each score show the answer behind it?
  • Do all candidates for a role get the same questions and rubric?
  • Can candidates ask for a human review?
  • Which languages does it really interview in?
  • Where is candidate data stored, and for how long?

What candidates should know

  • The interviewer should say it is AI at the start
  • You should be told what is recorded before you begin
  • Use a laptop or desktop in a quiet place with a working microphone and camera
  • Answer with real examples: what you did, how, and what happened

What is an AI interviewer, in one paragraph?

An AI interviewer is software that runs a job interview: it asks the questions, listens, follows up and scores the answers. AI interviews come in three kinds: text chat, recorded one-way video, and live two-way conversation by voice or video. The good ones tell candidates they are AI, use the same questions and rubric for everyone applying to a role, show the evidence behind each score, and leave the decision to a person.
