What UAE recruiters look for first

Recruiters in the UAE often screen hundreds of applications for one role, many from outside the country. Before reading your experience, they want to know whether you can start, and when. That is why these details sit near the top of a Gulf CV:

  • Current location. "Dubai, UAE" tells them you are here. If you are abroad, say where and whether you are willing to relocate.
  • Visa status. For example "Employment visa, transferable", "Spouse visa", "Golden visa" or "Visit visa, valid until March". If you are a UAE national, say so.
  • Notice period. "Available immediately" or "30 days' notice" answers the next question before it is asked.
  • Nationality. Many UAE CVs include it, and some application forms ask for it. It is your choice to add it to the CV.
  • A UAE phone number in the international format, +971 5X XXX XXXX, if you have one.

Sections and order

Use the same order as a standard CV: contact and the details above, a short summary, experience (most recent first), education, skills, languages and licences or certifications. For a fresher, education and projects move up.

Two pages is normal for an experienced candidate in the UAE. For a graduate or someone with under three years of experience, one page reads better.

Languages and licences matter more here

Many roles in the UAE involve customers who speak Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog, Malayalam or other languages. List each language you can work in, with an honest level: native, fluent, professional or conversational.

If a role involves driving or field work, add your UAE driving licence. Add professional licences that apply in the UAE, such as a DHA or DOH licence for healthcare, or a certification your industry recognises.

Photo, date of birth and marital status

You will see many UAE CVs with a photo, a date of birth and marital status. None of these shows whether you can do the job, and you don't need to include them unless an employer specifically asks. If you add a photo, use a plain, professional one, and keep in mind that some applicant tracking systems can't read a CV that is built around one.

Tailor it to the Gulf market

  • Name companies and places clearly. A recruiter in Dubai may not know a regional firm in Kerala or Lahore, so add a few words: "a 40-store electronics chain".
  • Give numbers in a form people here understand, such as AED for money, or say the currency.
  • If you have GCC experience, make it easy to spot. If you don't, show the transferable part: the customers, the scale, the systems.
  • Write an English CV for English job postings, and keep an Arabic version ready for roles that ask for one.

What is the right CV format for jobs in the UAE?

A UAE CV uses a standard single-column layout with your current location, visa status and notice period near the top, often with nationality, followed by a short summary, experience (most recent first), education, skills, languages and any UAE licences. Two pages is fine for experienced candidates; graduates should aim for one. A photo, date of birth and marital status are optional and only needed if the employer asks.
